On the other side

Whoosh! I make the jump, and it's a good day: I am focused, ready and busy deftly resizing ads, color correcting images, recreating copy blocks and solving problems presented. I am thanked and complimented on my eye and my speed, by the folks who seem pretty nice. I eat lunch with several of them, and am please they are not standoffish towards the Temp.

I am one of two up for the job, and tomorrow my competitor gets his day, he has a financial advance over me in that he their freelance guy, and I'm the placement agency guy, so if they go with me, it will cost them more. Had they only answered my email a week sooner they would have known me before calling the agency, but as it is, since the agency got my foot in the door they get the find.

I heard that the guy who replaced me at my last job, came from the place I want to go. He is unhappy in my old position, and wants to come back but they won't take him because he doesn't have the skills. At first I was pleased with Schafenfreude, but then I realized that most of the people in the creative end of the Biz are quite nice, and while it paid ok, I wouldn't wish my old job on anyone. They claim, "There's no 'jerk' in team." and neglect the fact that the technically the owner is not ON the team that he owns by definition. But that's just being bitter. Can I fault the Sucker who replaced me at the Sucker job? No.

And while I was busy, it was a "day flying by" kind of busy. I've been bored silly for the last 6 months if not longer, so I could really use some more of those days, especially if they pay well.

Media Rodeo

Media-Plural of medium, a means of communication. The definition will used very loosely if completely incorrectly.

The Prestige, the movie. Directed by Christopher Nolan, starring Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman. A pretty damn cool movie, much better than The Illusionist. Two illusionists (no relation) do battle over fame and fortune at the end of the 19th Century. Both characters are pretty unsympathetic, so I don't care who the winner was, but ending (though telegraphed) was neat. A solid B for effort.

The Prestige, the book by Greg Priest. The book came first, so you know it was better. Well written and told in diary form to the great-grand son and daughter of battling illusionists. Of course, the characters and their motives for besting each other are really nailed down, as well as their distinct personalities and character flaws. Although I knew the ending of the movie (and sneaked a peek at the ending of the book at Borders), the book still maintained my level of surprise right up until the end. A-/B+.

Battlestar Galactica, Season 3 Finale: Unfortunately I read the spoilers because it sounded just too frakin' unbelievable, but turned out to be true. Post no spoilers in the comments as Crazy Legs Dave hasn't watched it yet. I was still extremely pleased, and think waiting until Jan. 2008 is out of control but I'm expecting a quality product by then.B+. Season 2 and 2.5 finales A+

Allergy Shots, the medium of allergy control: I'm all for it, and just began to take them for the cats and the Great Out Doors, but rumors from a friend who had done it 15 years ago and left him worse off have left me questioning it. C

Baby Bunnys, awwwwww: Alessandra was cleaning the yard and fucked up their nest leaving them orphans. Luckily, our neighbors are willing to wake up every 3 hours and feed them puppy formula and hopefully nurse them back to health (they have bunny experience). A for cute D+/C- survivability.

Reality TV specifically Dancing with Stars, American Idol: I hate you for sucking me in while I practice guitar and spend time with my Sweety. You, you're producers and judges, contestants and sponsors will all burn in HELL.F.

Brazilian Soap Operas: As muleres estao mution gostoso A-

Cell Phones: Will I ever get a good signal? D unless there is an emergency and the phone is charged and I get through then it gets an A.

A cat in a turtleneck sweater: A+

Crocs: the medium of communication between foot and earth. Much ridiculed by myself (Style King) until actually placed on my feet. A happy foot is a happy Cap'n. 'Nuff said. A

Sleep, the medium of dreams and imagination. A++ when done right.

Cap'n Babble

Just some thoughts and words about the last few days.

If St. Louis hosts "The Second Largest Mardi Gras in the US after NO" then why is it take place only on Saturday and leave the neighborhood looking like shit?

Nothing says classy like dry Red Beans and Rice vomit on your office entrance stairs.

Even though it is sunny and warm, the colors are still flat and washed out like an old photo.

On the grass by the side of the highway I see a hawk hopping along with a mouse in it's beak as I zoom by.

My guitar is floundering, I am going to relearn nearly from the beginning.

Listening to NPR yesterday in a very brief time I heard the author of Alone Together: How Marriage in America Is Changing talking and I realized what my daily married relationship was becomming. All I did was mention the name to Alessandra and she knew exactly what I was talking about. We resolved to spend more time "together together" but not last night because she had to knit a hat.

I was supposed to have President's Day off, but the office computer broke and it fell to me to fix it. What should have taken an hour tops took all day because the guy who set up the computer never gave us the XP install disc, and he died couple of months ago. In metaphor. It was a screwdriver job and all I had in my tool box was an assortment of hammers. After banging away at it all day and into the early evening I gave up and took it to a professional. He had the correct tools. It is now fixed. Yay.

So I got to take today off. And practice guitar.

I called my health insurance company today to ask them a question. Somehow it came up in the conversation that she doesn't have health insurance. She's a 3rd party phone girl, but that just seems wrong.

I heard a song on the radio that reminded me. Once I met a guy who was a nurse. I don't recall how I met him, or his name, or what he looked like. But I do remember he was a total wet blanket to be around, and had no social skills, yet he continued to call me and want to go out and do stuff. I couldn't get rid of him until one day he somehow got the hint.

At another point in time, around then, I fell in with a couple of lawyers (I was a pizza guy), and I was smitten by the female of the two. It turned out that I was the loser friend. I don't remember their names either.

I'm driving down the same stretch of highway where I saw the hawk, thinking about this babble post. I'm headed the other way though. I am listening to the driving rhythm of Tom Petty's Running Down a Dream...crawling in traffic.
