WTF: Cop Shoves Rider off Bike for no Reason
At the critical mass bike ride this weekend in NYC, a Cop just runs up and shoves this guy off a bike for no apparent reason. The cyclist was on a path to hit said Pig and Piggy just runs up and knocks him off the bike.
Not all cops are Pigs, but this dude sure takes the bacon.

What's Wrong With This Painting?

I saw this painting last week and I was struck by...something about it. I think it's supposed to be whimsy, but in my mind comes across as a deliberate attempt to rewrite history. Look, "The People" are undereducated enough as it is. Do we really need an extra-discreet piece of misinformation lodged in our heads?

Remembering George Carlin : NPR
More than 7 Dirty Words
Remember as you read the quick quotes that pop up today about George Carlin's Death, and the bummed out eulogies (of which I am indeed bummed out), that he was far more than "The Hippie Dippy Weatherman" and the 7 Dirty Words guy. George was a Master of Observation, and the foundation of his humor was NOT about the silly little foibles of American Culture that make us chuckle, but focused on the the major train wrecks and squandered birthright of the human animal.
He hated humanity in the general and loved individuals in the specific, and I'm glad he lived long enough to make us squirm with discomfort when faced with the mirror then achieve catharsis with laughter. At the end he was a cranky old-fart, with a laser-eye and the courage to tell us all to fuck off. And for that, I'll miss him.
Here are a few links I'd posted the last couple of years.

The Sheeple say "Bahhhhhh"
Neil Young Fans Suddenly Love War
I remember the commercials in the 80's for CSNY doing a concert for Vietnam Vets, and all these guys in their uniforms grooving. I'm gonna bet that the walk outs aren't vets and have never seen any military action.
It's been a long time comin'
It's goin' to be a Long Time Gone.
And it appears to be a long,
Appears to be a long,
Appears to be a long
Time, yes, a long, long, long ,long time before the dawn.
Turn, turn any corner.
Hear, you must hear what the people say.
You know there's something that's goin' on around here,
The surely, surely, surely won't stand the light of day.
And it appears to be a long,
Appears to be a long,
Appears to be a long
Time, yes, a long, long, long ,long time before the dawn.
Speak out, you got to speak out against the madness,
You got to speak your mind,
If you dare.
But don't no don't now try to get yourself elected
If you do you had better cut your hair.
`Cause it appears to be a long,
Appears to be a long,
Appears to be a long,
Time, such a long long long long time before the dawn.
It's been a long time comin'
It's goin' to be a long time gone.
But you know,
The darkest hour is always
Always just before the dawn.
And it appears to be a long, appears to be a long,
Appears to be a long
Time before the dawn.
Despite four decades of feverishly anti-establishment rocking by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, fans are showing up at concerts and booing the rock veterans for performing anti-war tunes. They've even been marching out en masse in protest against songs like "Ohio" and "Military Madness." "The forthcoming documentary 'CSNY: Deja Vu' charts that friction, portraying fans who saluted the group's efforts and those who felt betrayed by them, while introducing viewers to Iraqi War vets who are now protesting the war as musicians, politicians and social workers. Directed by Young and due in theaters July 25, the film blends concert and behind-the-scenes footage with short news features created by CNN correspondent Mike Cerre."
Q: One of the film's most powerful scenes shows Atlanta fans angrily filing out of the venue, not before telling you to go to hell, and that's putting it kindly. When you look back on the tour, are there faces and middle fingers in particular that stick out?
Neil Young: "I remember some faces. There's one guy I remember for sure, and he's not in the movie. This was a harrowing experience at times, and it's not an experience that I would like to repeat. I think it was a one-off. I think if I did this kind of thing for the rest of my life, I'd become like CNN, and I don't really respect that very much. It's like the same thing on a loop. I don't see the need for that. I like to be a full-length program, not a repeating segment."
Q: Besides Atlanta, the reaction in Orange County, California, was particularly bad, and even spurred fights. Did the negative reactions cause you to second-guess yourself at all?
Young: "There was never any sense of giving up or anything. We went from July 4 to September 10 on the tour, and I remember feeling glad that we weren't playing on September 11. There were moments throughout it where you just shook your head and said, 'God, what are we doing?' But the songs were there, the feeling was there, the audience was there, and we were doing it."

This is soul. Not Al Green soul. Not Isaac Hayes soul (but perhaps a bit closer to that). This is the soul of the black man. It is the soul of a student of history who is sick and tired of force-feeding and ready to spit back. This is the soul of a man tired of the system and using his art to reframe and correct it.
When it first came out in 1971, Eugene McDaniels’ vitriolic statement irked and ired many, including Vice President Spiro Agnew, who personally contacted Atlantic Records to demand that the album be shelved. Despite this high praise from such a high post, the album’s music and message has survived in the hearts and minds of music lovers (including The Beastie Boys, who sampled a piece of McDaniels’ wisdom on Ill Communication ) and has now been revived in the equally aware hands of Producer Joel Dorn.
Though the abum may be a grand departure from McDaniel’s earlier hit, "Compared To What," its provocative soothe continues to reverberate. Predicting the coming of acid jazz and even gangster rap, McDaniels covers both the topics of his time — from the horoscopic groove of "Lovin’ Man" to the androgynous murder of "Jagger the Dagger" — and of times past and still present in sharp-eyed chronicles like "Headless Heroes," "Supermarket Blues," the subtly bomb-bastic "Freedom Death Dance" and "The Parasite" (which may be dedicated to Native American artiast and activist Buffy St.Marie). Wrapping his sharp words in cozy key lines and absorbent rhythms, McDaniels tells it like it is and rarely shirks the truth. Though "Susan Jane" is a jangly Dylan-esque exercise in simple rhyme, it acts as a necessary break from McDaniels’ torrential attacks of conscience.

Jason Beghe (actor) Anti- Scientology video removed from YouTube
The 48-year-old was the first celebrity to speak out against the religion, telling how his 12 years with the church damaged him and accusing Scientology of being “destructive” and a “rip-off”.
After Beghe’s criticism of the church made headlines yesterday, YouTube suspended the account of the prolific Scientology critic who posted the video, making the clip unavailable to viewers.
But the suspension has angered YouTube users who have thrown their weight behind Mark Bunker, who uses the name XenuTV1 on the site.
By this morning, 45 YouTube members had used their sign-ons to re-post Bunker’s interview with the Cane and CSI actor.
In the clip, Benghe said: “My experience personally, and what I’ve observed for myself, is that Scientology is destructive and a rip-off.”
"It’s very, very dangerous for your spiritual, psychological and mental, emotional health and evolution. I think it stunts your evolution.”
The church insists it brings its members “spiritual enlightenment” and it has helped the world progress towards “the eradication of its ills”, including drugs, crime, violence and intolerance.
One user, Vongoloid, uploaded the video with the message: “Actor Jason Beghe exposes... Scientology to Mark Bunker of Xenu TV. YouTube suspended Mark's account, XenuTV1, so I am putting this up for justice.”
Another, Skeptic12345, simply said: “Rehosting while Mark Bunker's YouTube is down".
Angry viewers posted comments below the re-hosted clips.
“Unsuspend his f***ing account, YouTube,” wrote one.
“Banning free speech is a major no no. Knock it off.”
YouTube’s policy on suspending accounts relates to copyright and inappropriate content.
“We take copyright issues very seriously. We prohibit users from uploading infringing material and we cooperate with copyright holders to identify and promptly remove infringing content,” its policy states.
“YouTube reviews the content and removes it from the system within minutes if it violates our Terms of Use. This combined with our proprietary technology helps us to enforce the rules. We also disable the accounts of repeat offenders.”
It is not the first time YouTube and Scientology critics have clashed. After a video of Hollywood actor Tom Cruise speaking about Scientology was leaked to YouTube last year, the church raised copyright issues and the site removed the clip, angering its users.

Emphasis Mine
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush has welcomed Pope Benedict XVI to the White House with assurances that the United States is a nation of prayer and that its people are open to his message of hope.
Bush said that ``we need your message that all human life is sacred.''Unless they're brown.
Bush said that ``in a world where some no longer believe that we can distinguish between simple right and wrong, we need your message to reject this dictatorship of relativism.''signing statements and what's this bit about torture? You and your cabinet OKed torture right? Yes? Ok, I'm wondering how your own tongue won't jump out of your mouth and strangle you.
Benedict was only the second pope to visit the White House and the first in 29 years. He arrived in picture-perfect spring weather on his 81st birthday, and the crowd of thousands sang him Happy Birthday. More than 9,000 guests, including several members of Bush's Cabinet, came to the ceremony, the largest in White House history.

Parents complain: Hendrix' words blotted off Toll Gate wall
In Toll Gate High School this week, the halls are abuzz with discussion of the first amendment. But the source of all the discussion cannot be found in any textbook. The thing that has the Titans talking is none other than a freshly painted, off-yellow blank wall. For the past three years, until two weeks ago, the wall held a mural by Toll Gate graduate Sara Barney. The mural featured a picture of a peace sign surrounded by people of all colors holding hands. The caption was a quote by legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix, who died of a drug overdose in 1970:More
“When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will know peace.” According to Toll Gate Principal Stephen Chrabaszcz, the mural was painted over after parents complained that Hendrix, as a drug user, should not be represented in a public school. Chrabaszcz declined to release the names of the parents who complained, citing that this would open them to unfair attacks.
"I agree with the parents,” Chrabaszcz said in a phone interview. “I just don’t want the kids thinking [Jimi Hendrix] is some great American hero. He was associated with the drug culture and that’s not something I want promoted in my school.” The school has not released a statement about the matter to students and, as of press time, has not yet briefed the faculty. The rumor around the school is that Chrabaszcz intends to replace the mural with the school's mission statement. As one result of the change, sophomore Victoria Hathaway started a petition that has been signed by more than 400 students and many teachers. The petition asks that the mural be recreated and the quote put back. It also demands that future changes be discussed with students and faculty...
Some students have been posting fliers featuring the Hendrix quote in the halls. A satiric reference to it was slipped into the dialogue of this year's school play. One student, Lindsey Lauble, even created a group about the issue on the social networking Web site, Facebook.com. The group is titled “If we can’t learn about Hendrix cuz he did drugs, NO MORE EDGAR ALLEN POE!!” "If we can learn that Edgar Allen Poe was kicked out of college for his alcohol abuse and drug abuse, we should be able to put up a quote that supports peace and love throughout the world,” said Lauble...

Media Stop
It's been a while since I've consumed enough media to even have a Media Rodeo, but I've had a few busy Media Days.
For some reason I think people will take these suggestions and/or comment on these posts, but what the hell, that's what blogs are for.

Holy Shit, what an amazing film. I knew it was Alterni-culturally relevant, and prophetic, but...Holy Shit!
What is about? Anchorman gets fired, flips out on air, gets rehired as "Truthspeaking Prophet", goes batshit crazy, gets awesome ratings, fights the Man, Man fights back while co-opting Rebellion and crushing the little guy...the usual.
Agentmatrix was kind enough to post 7 clips abbreviating and highlight the move. So if you want the Cliff Notes version, you can watch them all here:
I was going to post more, but this seems to be quite the largish post, so I'm gonna bag it until tomorrow or the next day.

Smile … Or Else
Behavior Detection Officers’ are now watching passengers’ facial expressions for signs of danger. It’s a new level of absurdity for America.
WEB-EXCLUSIVE COMMENTARY
By Patti Davis
Special to Newsweek
Updated: 11:40 a.m. CT Aug 16, 2007
Aug. 16, 2007 - It was bound to happen. Now even a frown or grimace can get you into trouble with The Man.
“Specially trained security personnel” will be watching passengers for “micro-expressions” that will reveal treacherous agendas and insidious intentions at airports around the country. These agents, who may literally hold your fate in their hands have been given a lofty, Orwellian name: "Behavior Detection Officers."
Did anyone ever doubt that George Orwell’s prophecies in “1984” would arrive? In that novel, he wrote, “You had to live—did live, from habit that became instinct—in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized.”
In the study of “micro-expressions”—yes, it is actually a field of study and there are some who are arrogant enough to call it a science—it has been decided that when people wish to conceal emotions, the truth of their feelings is revealed in facial flashes. These experts have determined that fear and disgust are the key things to look for because they can hint of deception.

what happens when you piss off a pregnant woman?
She gets a letter to the editor published in the The New York Times
Sock it to 'em Wodnesdag. Fuck the Meat Eating Man!
To the Editor:
I am shocked by the ignorance of the recent outcry against vegan diets in the media, most recently Nina Planck’s article about the dangers and irresponsibility of vegan diets during pregnancy and infancy. What these naysayers consistently neglect is that vegan diets, as with all other restricted diets, must be well planned.
It is not enough to simply cut animal products (or carbohydrates, or calories) out of one’s diet. Without a concerted effort by the consumer, restricted diets of any kind may fail to provide adequate nutrition.
Generalizing from a handful of ignorant vegans to the entire vegan population does a disservice to those of us who have spent years educating ourselves on human nutritional needs and how to meet them on a plant-based diet.
Well-planned vegan diets have been shown repeatedly to be sufficient, and even beneficial at all stages of life, including during pregnancy and infancy.
