All Hail King Peon
You know...I know most people are Peons at their place of employment, but today I feel extra peony with a side order of "Yes'm". During a drawing workshop, I told a kid that what they drew was cute, and I was told by my superior to let the workshop instructor comment on the kid's art. I feel like I was told to "shut up" and stay in my place, which is...peon van driver, administrative assistant and boys bathroom monitor. While it was agreed up that the instructor be the sole instructor of the workshop, I felt as though my voice were taken away.
I've noticed that we four office workers are becoming our titles, and those who have said, "Oh, I'm not really your superior." Are in fact becoming so, which I find kind of galling because that means in an office of 4, I have 3 bosses. I am rapidly becoming disillusioned with this gig.

Was this a clinical thing? Like therapy? If so, then I can see your superior's point. If not, he probably needs to STFU. I don't know what kind of other interaction that you have with these kids, but I'd think (in my non-professional capacity) that ANY positive reaction (and I know yours came from the heart) from an adult or perceived "power" figure, would be a good thing. But what do I know...
She has a point in that the kids need to know who the leader of the workshop is and where to get their praise, BUT, I drive them around and feel a compliment should be ok. Otherwise I'm just the guard and the van driver who has to accompany the young men into the bathroom so they don't trash the place who is not allowed to have an opinon.
I'm not saying this is this is actually the case, but one should be aware of a power play "for the kids".
