Shit, meet Fan.
The Deal:
Mark Plattner and Mark Florida both stupidly plan vacations at the same time, and pay good money without checking to see whether or not the other guy has vacation time. Plattner believes Florida is taking vacation next week and not his week, asks for vacation and thus gets the right to go before he discovers Florida has planned his trip for the same week. Plattner unwilling to throw Florida to the wolves, but also unwilling to cancel vacation because the hotels are booked and itnerary is set. Plattner doesn't want to disappoint the wife and lose x number of dollars canceling hotels and missing the event which is held Aug 2-8. Florida only has a window of opportunity to do his event and doesn't want to disappoint the wife, kids and extended family. Mom invested money in house, it's set in stone.
Options from Best to Worst:
Both get to go. Yay! No hard feelings on anyones part. External decision on the part of the company. If they can't or won't comply then move on to next option.
Overlap time. Plattner leaves after work on Thursday. Florida comes back on Friday. Not desirable, but doable. Involves cutting vacation short and possibly losing money in hotel fee and Heroic driving on Plattner's part. Wives may be upset but hey, it's a compromise.
Florida goes the entire time. Plattner loses lots of money in non refundable hotel, wife and plattner miss their event. Lots of bad feelings.
Plattner goes entire time. Florida misses out on window of opportunity for vacation, lots of bad feelings.
What is the best way to resolve this?
...to be continued.

How about the Buy-Out?
One person goes as planned, but he pays a portion of the monetary losses the other incurs by having to reschedule. You could make it a coin flip or -- if you're into freemarketstyle -- the person who's willing to pay more of the other's costs gets to go.

The overlap option loses me nothing but a day at 127 Corridor...Home of the World's Longest Yardsale, so I can go with that.
The problem is getting Mark F's wife to agree to it.

Why make one comment when three will do?
The beauty of the buy-out is that it gets you and your spouse both invested in the decision, and minimizes bad feelings all around. Since the spouse would (presumably) have to OK paying out the extra money to go as planned, she's an active participant in the decision instead of just being a victim of circumstances.

I've discussed it with Alessandra and the Rev Fen's buy out option is a viable one. That way we only lose 150 bucks, so the offer is on the table.
Also, I have to state my total lack of desire to shaft Mark F. He's the only one who keeps me sane at my office. He is my brother in the trenches.

Oh yeah, the buy out is only 150 bucks.
And I would never play RPS is for pussies. The way to go is Rock Paper Scissors Spock Lizard
